Cross-Country tracks
Off-trail riding can mean anything from trailside play areas to ditch lines, frozen waterways, and serious back country boondocking far from roads and trails.
It can even mean organized cross-country racing where just about any conditions can be encountered, but no matter which of these you ride, you need a tough track that provides extra traction when the terrain gets rough and the snow gets deep.
When considering what kind of a track you need for this type of off-trail riding, start with how much time you really spend in it and how much time you spend on hard packed trails getting to and from it.
If you split time between these environments, a mid-height 1.5-inch lug is a good compromise that will be reasonably at home almost anywhere. But if you spend most or all of your time off in the rough stuff, a more aggressive 1.75-inch lug track would probably be a better choice.
Some cross-country tracks, like the new Camoplast BackCountry models have flat-faced lug designs derived from snocross racing rubber for maximum forward thrust in deep, mealy snow conditions.
Others like the Camoplast Intense, Crossover, and RipSaw 1.5 and RipSaw 1.75 models feature various multi-element lug designs engineered to help control side slip for better handling on or off the trail.
